Many of us are familiar with the concept of following our passions. While the words “determined,” “focused,” and “driven” are all descriptors for producing action, I believe the word “passion” is most powerful. Passion can ignite and inspire oneself to put effort into effective action and change.
Great things come when we go after what we believe in. How do we know what our passion is? Our passion isn’t necessarily what we’re good at or what is most popular at the time. What our passion should be is to seek God and put Him first in everything. It seems simple enough, but it’s hard to actually do.. There was a time I wanted to be an actress; however, I have no natural talent in that specific area. Over the past few years, I began to ask God to reveal what I should do with my life. I came to realize that I have a passion for people. With that passion I believe my purpose in life is to bring encouragement to others and to give a voice to those who aren’t heard. I can see God more clearly as I follow my passion and when I seek Him. When we make God our ultimate goal in everything, our talents and passions will thrive. The Lord knows the desires of our hearts. If we find joy in writing, painting, dancing, filming, etc., the Lord already knows. He will bless us by enabling us to do what He has intended for us and what our hearts long for most.
Once we know our passion, we must follow it. There should always be a personal intensity for what each of us is after. This intensity should allow our passion for something to be felt by others. When there is enthusiasm for what we love, it is contagious and inspiring. However, it becomes difficult to follow our passion when it makes its way into our work. Tasks become monotonous, or we become weary, but that is when we can seek God more. It is refreshing when His passionate love is so evident that it reignites the fire within us.
Know your passion, pursue God, and follow your heart’s desire. Remember that our passion is what we were created to do. Always allow God to be your ultimate goal in your pursuit of passion.
“Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” – Psalm 37:4

We often have discussions in our worship groups about passion and gifts. Too often we all tend to question our mission that God wants us to fulfill. Statements are often made like: “I’m not good at anything.” “I don’t do anything special.” “What could I possibly do?” “I don’t know what my gifts are.” These discussions in our worship groups help because others may see our gift that we aren’t aware of. My husband and I run a youth program from our church that serves youth in the neighborhood who come from broken homes, low-income families and most of the kids have never been to a church service. If anyone had asked me to run this youth group…I would have run screaming. However, God asked us to do it through sermons and guidance from our pastor. We soon realized this was our mission, our passion and our gift from God. So, on youth nights when we are exhausted from working ful time and the hectic schedules of our children…we still show up for youth and trust God will help us in our work.
